Warren Buffett phoned Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson with a stimulus idea when the 2008 financial crisis erupted. It may have saved the US economy

U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson (L) shares a laugh with financier Warren Buffett, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, at the Conference on U.S. Capital Market Competitiveness in Washington March 13, 2007.

  • Warren Buffett phoned Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson at the height of the 2008 financial crisis with a suggestion that likely saved the US economy from an even deeper recession.
  • The famed investor and Berkshire Hathaway CEO proposed the government plow capital directly into banks instead of only buying their distressed assets.
  • Paulson quickly gathered the bosses of the nation’s biggest banks and convinced them to accept billions of dollars in investment.
  • The Treasury demanded preferred stock paying chunky dividends, as well as stock warrants in return, emulating Buffett’s bailout of Goldman Sachs in September 2008.
  • Former President George W. Bush called it “probably the greatest financial bailout ever” and said it “probably saved a depression.”

Warren Buffett made a late-night call on Saturday, 11 October 2008 that likely spared the US from an even more devastating financial crisis.

The billionaire investor and Berkshire Hathaway CEO dialed then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, the pair said in “Panic: The Untold Story of the 2008 Financial Crisis,” a documentary released in 2018.

“Hank, this is Warren,” Buffett said. A tired and groggy Paulson’s first thought was, “My mom has a handyman named Warren, why is he calling me?”

Buffett was calling about the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), which authorized the Treasury to spend $700 billion purchasing distressed assets from banks. Lawmakers passed it in a desperate effort to shore up the financial system after the collapse of Wachovia and Washington Mutual — two of the greatest bank failures in American history.

Passaic Dignity Home Offers A Place For Homeless Individuals To Receive Mail

PASSAIC, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Having a mailbox is something most people don’t think twice about, but many homeless individuals don’t have a place to get important documents or letters.

The city of Passaic is changing that.

CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis spoke to a man who didn’t want to share his name but shared the hardships faced since losing his job as a handyman nine months ago.

“When you lose your job, you don’t got no money to pay the rent,” he said.

It’s a problem experienced by many in the pandemic. The man says no home and no mailing address means “for a job, especially if you apply for something, you never know they respond, you never know if they accept you.”

“It came up in a conversation with me that some don’t have access to mail, things that we take for granted every single day. They don’t know how to connect to get their benefits, whether social security, or even if they applied for a job, what address are they gonna put down for correspondence?” Passaic Mayor Hector Lora said.

Now, they can put down 276 Broadway — the address for Passaic Dignity House, which now has mailboxes designated to homeless individuals.

“This is not just for someone to come in and say ‘Give me a mailbox’ and we won’t see you for six or seven months. These are people we want to follow because the ultimate goal is to get them off the street,” Lora said.

That can start with a simple letter, which the post office delivers through a slot. Human Services takes care of the rest.

The mail either gets placed in one of 21 mailboxes or it’s held for

Carole Baskin gifted properties worth hundreds of thousands to handy man after husband Don Lewis’s disappearance

CAROLE Baskin gifted properties worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to her handyman shortly after husband Don Lewis’s disappearance, The Sun can reveal.

The new twist comes after handyman Kenny Farr’s ex-wife Trish claimed he told her Don was ground up and fed to the alligators.

A cadaver dog also recently picked up the scent of human remains just meters from a lake house that once belonged to Don, raising further questions about the mysterious case, which gained worldwide attention in the docu-series Tiger King.

Investigator Jim Rathman, who conducted a lengthy probe into the case for Tigers, Lies and Cover Ups, an Investigation Discovery documentary, says he uncovered unusual connections between Carole, Don and Kenny including how Kenny brought home all of Don’s gun collection around the time he went missing.

Property records shared with The Sun also show how Kenny was gifted six properties by Carole for under $20k – when they were worth 15 times that sum, according to property records in Florida.

Carole hit back against the claims, telling The Sun the properties were not gifts as she was just trying to help him get started in business and he later signed them back over.

“[Kenny’s ex wife] Trish revealed that missing link to me telling me about the property transfers,” Jim told The Sun.

“Baskin gave multiple properties to Kenny, just a month after her husband went missing.

“And these transactions were under $10k value, which you do not have to report to the IRS.

“But they were worth hundreds of thousands.
