Home closings increase in 2020 along coastal SC counties despite COVID pandemic | Myrtle Beach Business

Myrtle Beach Realtor Travis Muir put a condo up for sale in September at Blue Water Resort on Ocean Boulevard and within an hour, it was sold.

Not an every day occurrence, the realtor for The Hoffman Group admits. But, after all, it’s 2020 and anything can happen.

“The biggest thing is pricing it within realistic market price,” Muir said, adding 2020 has been his best year for sales, pushing nearly triple what he normally does.

“With this one being an investment property, the price point for the rate of return… I think one of the biggest things, too, is the interest rates are lower than they have been in a very long time. That gives people more incentive to go ahead and make that jump. They were thinking of buying in a two- or three-year window, but now with the interest rates so low, people are moving faster.”

Closed sales of single family homes and condos have increased along the southeastern coast of South Carolina, and real estate agents are pointing to low interest rates and the COVID-19 pandemic expediting retirement plans as the reason for the increase.

It has also caused a tight market for available single-family homes and condos, leading one real estate expert to call it the tightest market she’s seen in a decade.

The Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors released a report that showed a gradual increase of closings from June to August.

Closed sales for single-family homes and condos rose from May to June by 6.7 percent, then by 22 percent from June to July and finally by 11.9 percent from July to August.

September sees “big improvement” in retail sales growth | Business

The BRC has released figures covering the five weeks from 30th August-3rd October 2020, showing a sales increase of 5.6% on a total basis.

In September, UK retail sales increased 6.1% on a like-for-like basis from September 2019, when they had decreased 1.3% from the preceding year.

Over the three months to September, in-store sales of non-food items declined 12.3% on a total and 9.5% on a like-for-like basis. This is better than the six-month and 12-month total average declines of 29.6% and 18.8% respectively. Over the three-months to September, non-food retail sales increased by 5.2% on a like-for-like basis and 3.2% on a total basis.

Online non-food sales increased by 36.7% in September, against a growth of 3.5% in September 2019. This is below the three-month average of 39.7% but above the 12-month average of 26.3%.

“September saw a big improvement in retail sales growth, however sales over the last six months are still down on the previous year,” said Helen Dickinson OBE, chief executive, British Retail Consortium. “Tighter coronavirus restrictions have continued to hold back clothing and footwear, particularly as the Government further restricts social events. With office workers still at home for foreseeable future, the sales of electronics, household goods and home office products have remained high.

“September sales have also given retailers early signs that consumers are starting their Christmas shopping earlier this year, which retailers are encouraging their customers to do in order to manage demand at Christmas and keep people safe. However, store-based sales, excluding food are still in double-digit decline.

“The industry is beginning to recover, however, forced store or warehouse closures during any future lockdowns could put paid to this progress. Retailers have invested hundreds of millions in making their premises COVID-secure, with perspex screens, social distancing, additional staff and hygiene measures.

JCB challenged over machinery used to demolish Palestinian homes | Business

JCB, the British tractor and heavy machinery firm, which has donated millions of pounds to the Conservative party and at least £25,000 to Boris Johnson’s leadership campaign, may be in breach of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s guidelines on exporting goods for use in the demolition of Palestinian villages in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, a UK government body has assessed.

The case is likely to test the degree to which multinationals are responsible if their export goods are being sold by local distributors in ways that infringe human rights.

JCB can now enter into government-overseen mediation with the NGO that made the claim or it can outright contest the claim.

The claim was launched by Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights last December after JCB refused to communicate with the lobby group over claims that its tractors were being used to tear up Palestinian villages.

The little-known complaints procedure was set up by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government and is designed to give an avenue to press multinationals to abide by their corporate social responsibility undertakings as set out by the OECD.

The National Contact Point quango, a subsidiary of the Foreign Office that oversees the complaints, issued a statement on Monday. It said that after examining the Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights complaint and hearing JCB’s rebuttal, it deemed that JCB had a case to answer and that the issue fell within its remit. It added that the NGO’s claims were “material and substantiated”.

The chair of JCB is Anthony Bamford, a Conservative peer. The company gave Johnson £25,000 for his leadership campaign. Overall the firm has given the Conservatives more than £10m since 2010, according to the Electoral Commission.
