ALLIANCE  Walmart has completed remodeling projects in its store at 2700 W. State St.

The changes offer a new look and help customers save time, said Sarah Hall, store manager, in a press release. 

“Nearly every department in this store was refreshed in one way or another and our customers will immediately notice the exciting updates when they walk through the door,” she said.

Changes covered the basics: new signs, lighting and flooring throughout the store, remodeled bathrooms, new shelving and lower fixtures, and an increased number of products in the home, pets, sporting goods and hardware sections.

The layout of the grocery has changed. There are new produce tables, a hot case and ready-to-go items in the new deli counter.

The electronics department now has interactive displays that allow customers to test products before making a purchase.

The store also has made changes to cope with the coronavirus pandemic. It includes adjusted store hours — 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. — to allow employees to clean and stock shelves. Store employees now undergo screenings and temperature checks before starting work and are required to wear masks.

Holm Auto Good News: Salina Tech students eager to learn, while remodeling Ashby House shelter – News – Salina Journal

Pumped with zeal and strapped into a loaded carpenter’s belt, Jordan Castaneda greeted Salina Technical College classmates for some on-the-job learning.

“I’m ready to get this party going,” said the 18-year-old Salinan on Wednesday, aching for some construction work after spending weeks mostly in a classroom.

The budding builders were “chomping at the bit. They’ve been in the classroom since the start of the semester (Aug. 20),” said Kevin Watters, Salina Tech construction technology instructor.

His crew that ranges in size from eight to 11, was eager to join in the remodel of an Ashby House shelter at 158 S. Eighth.

“I love getting hands on, in the action. The days go faster. It feels like forever in the classroom,” said Castaneda, a 2020 Salina Central High School graduate, who credits his uncle, Mario Martinez, owner of a Salina construction business, for introducing him to the trade, and gifting him the passion to build.

Several departments at the technical college have joined in repurposing the 100-plus-year-old, two-story home that was moved to the Ashby House complex during the summer of 2019.

Salina-based Blue Beacon International’s hotels division, Lighthouse Properties, donated the house, moving expenses and some of the concrete costs, to Ashby House.

The old home had to go to create more room for the new downtown Salina hotel, Homewood Suites by Hilton.

Attached to a basement foundation, the house is undergoing a $400,000 transformation into a 30-bed primary shelter, said Andy Houltberg, Ashby House executive director.

The nonprofit organization that runs a shelter for women and families, and a number of other programs — Sober Living Program, Free Store open to the community, Transitional Housing, Toy Store and Career Closet — has raised about half of the money and services necessary to complete the work, Houltberg said, through grants

The movement toward the project began in earnest last year, Hora said.

“We looked at the school and the board wanted to narrow it down to what they felt was really needed,” Hora said, “and to do it fiscally responsibly.”

A brochure identifies what the project would address: safety/security, non-code-compliant restrooms, substandard locker rooms, a non-private student health and services area, a congested commons area and aging parts of the building that are no longer adequate.

Gaffney said security to monitor who enters the building is inadequate.

“The camera system doesn’t take a very wide view and there may be more than one person wanting to check in,” Gaffney said. “In visiting with other superintendents, that’s a real safety issue.”

Another issue is the music room, which lacks adequate storage, Hora said. A new music room would be part of the addition on the east side of the building and would offer adequate storage space for music equipment, she said.

The current office space and music room would be opened up to create a larger commons area, and the concession stand would occupy part of that area as well.

“Then there are the locker rooms,” Hora said. “The junior high locker rooms are in the 1914 building in the basement. They’ve done a good job of trying to fix them up, but they are just inadequate.”

By far the most important reason that homeowners had for remodeling their homes was that their families had changed over time.  Their home fit their families years ago.  But now their families have fundamentally changed and the house no longer fits.

Many homeowners state that they love where their house is located. They love their neighbors and the neighborhood. They love the community they have created along the way. They don’t want to sell their house and move to one that fits better. 

But maybe their older child has gone away to college and they have two teenagers left in the house now, and they need to make some changes. Tulsa home remodeling company hiring crew members amid pandemic

TULSA, Okla. — Unemployment in Oklahoma decreases each week, but about 80,000 people are still without a job.

2 Works for You is highlighting a company that started small 42 years ago doing siding and windows. Now, as demand grew due to the coronavirus pandemic, business is booming.

Burnett Home Improvement said they used to make a few hundred thousand dollars a year, but hit company records this summer. Last month, they made nearly $700,000. They said the increase is because people are at home, restless, with no places to vacation.

So they’ve seen people spending extra funds on remodeling their home.

Vice President Shawn Donahue has been with the company for almost two years and wants to encourage people to apply. Their faith-based company prides itself on treatment and fairness.

Burnett Home Improvement employee Vasilik Napelenok said, “Most of the people are Christian here, so I think that’s really what matters to me. I know these people are not going to lie, they are going to be honest… that’s one of the best things about working here.”

Donahue’s main job is to make sure the company’s crew members stay happy because they wouldn’t have the business or reputation they have today without them.

“If anybody is willing to learn, we are always willing to give them a shot. We always want to do our best by people, we want to give everyone the opportunity to succeed, whether that be here, or somewhere else,” Donahue said.
