Woman discovers genius hand wash sink cleaning hack by accident

Serendipity (Picture: FAMILY LOCKDOWN TIPS & IDEAS)

An Essex woman has revealed how she mistakenly cleaned her sink with hand soap and the results are pretty stunning.

Emma Ramsey said it works better than anything she tried before, sharing pictures of the shiny results on Facebook group Family Lockdown Tips & Ideas.

She wrote: ‘So, I stumbled upon this completely by accident the other day when washing my hands with anti bacterial hand-wash in the bathroom basin.

‘I quickly washed the basin out smothering it in anti bac hand-wash and noticed how sparkly the taps were and still are!

‘So I put it to test in the kitchen sink and not only does it come out sparkly clean, it also removes rust and limescale!’

Not half bad! (Picture: FAMILY LOCKDOWN TIPS & IDEAS)

Emma went on to explain how she tried different methods to get the taps to gleam again, but nothing comes close to this hand wash hack.

She wrote: ‘I’ve tried brillo pads in the past but got sick of removing metal splinters from my hands and I’ve tried stainless steel cleaner but nothing has worked as well as this!

‘You can buy it for around £1 so it’s cheap and it leaves your hands smelling nice and not half as damaged as actual cleaning products.’

Your type of sink will determine what you use to clean it

This week we had more than 40 questions by email, happyhandyman2@yahoo.com. And they were great questions. I want to share those with you because if one person has this problem, others do also.

But first, I would like to solve a mystery for some homeowners. Who doesn’t like a good mystery? I know I do. Well unless it has to do with my home. Those mysteries are no fun. A customer was in the store and asked me how to get rid of a hard water stain at the bottom of his sink. My first question was what kind of sink did he have? If it’s porcelain, well then it’s easy – Delete Germ and a 3M scrubby sponge. Put a ring around the stain and then start cleaning. It will clean up immediately and then you want to rinse right away. End of story.

But when I asked my customer about his sink, he said “how am I supposed to know?” I asked him if the sink and the countertop were all one piece and he said yes. Those are man-made, marble counter tops. And if you read this article often then you know, they are delicate. These tops have to be cleaned with different products. You can use Bring It On, or Gel Gloss. They will take a little elbow grease, but they are safe and will provide a protective coating, that repels water stains.

Now if you are still confused about what kind of sink you have, look under the sink. If the bottom side of the sink looks chalky, it’s a man-made product.

Now to the email …

Question: I have couple of very noticeable burned (black) marks on my oak hardwood floor. Can anything be done to remove the burned marks without replacing the oak

The Bathroom Sink Style We’re Currently Seeing Everywhere

There’s a world of bathroom sink silhouettes out there (pedestal, under-mount, vessel, bucket), yet when it comes to material, they all tend to be made out of the same thing: slippery white ceramic. It’s easy to clean, sure, and you can’t call it an eyesore, but when was the last time you got excited about the boring basin style? Things are looking up, as this space is experiencing a big change, and—to no one’s shock—it’s partially farmhouse inspired.

We’re currently seeing antique stone sinks pop up in bathrooms and powder rooms everywhere. The go-to choice among designers like Kelly Nutt (see her space, above) appears to be limestone: a durable, readily available (read: cost-effective), and easy-to-clean option. Weighing in at hundreds of pounds, these heavy troughs—whether marble, limestone, or travertine—require a sturdy support system. Nutt cut down the legs of an old console table and used that for her foundation. The raw, almost Brutalist quality to these statement fixtures is worth giving up sleek porcelain for good.

The sandy ecru undertones of limestone play nicely with the oak panels that cover the walls of this Ashe Leandro–designed space. Both of the features were sourced from Chateau Domingue, a Houston-based company that sells architectural antiques, including reclaimed wood and stone salvaged from demolished forts and castles across France, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, and Spain. This small room has a big story to tell.

“In a small space like a powder room, the details count,” says designer Amber Lewis of her decision to go with a reclaimed stone sink in this space. The wide trough provides a nice contrast against the textured charcoal walls. When you

A Great Sink That Can Endure Just About Anything

You can't go wrong with a ceramic sink because they are able to stand up well to just about anything. The various items that find their way into the typical sink to be washed can be quite varied from one household to the next. Some items can cause damages to the sink, leaving ugly scratches and stains behind.

A ceramic sink is very durable and the materials make it extremely difficult for any type of penetration. As a result, it is going to look like new even years after you have installed it. Such materials are resistant to staining and to scratching so you don't have to be worried that it is going to get messed up soon after you make that purchase.

Lovely Appearance

There is no question a ceramic sink is lovely, and you can buy it in a variety of types of colors. It isn't hard to find one that is the perfect fit for your bathroom. Some people stick with plain white but once you see all of the colors you can pick from, you may be included to select something different this time around.

Keep in mind, some of the acrylic products out there look very similar in colors and designs to ceramic sink products. However, they are going to be damaged, stained, and scratched before you realise it. While those cost less, the overall value and reliability isn't going to be there. Make sure you hold out for the better materials so you can love the way it looks for a very long time!

You can choose just to upgrade the sink portion of your bathroom design if you like. However, you can also decide to get a unit that offers both a cabinet with a countertop and the sink. The overall change it …
