An EF-3 Tornado Destroyed It In 2019, Today A Dallas Home Depot Store Reopens

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Home Depot store on Forest Lane in Dallas will reopen October 8, nearly a year after being ripped apart by a powerful tornado.

It was on October 20, 2019 when an EF-3 tornado swept through North Dallas, causing part of the store to collapse. On that one day there were 10 tornadoes — in Dallas, Garland and Richardson — that caused some $2 billion in damage to homes and businesses.

Today customers at the North Dallas location were happy to have their neighborhood home improvement store back open for business.

Customer Frank Jeffreys said, “It’s good to see them back smiling again, because it was such a hard time for them. I know it was, because it was pretty devastating when it [tornado] came through.”

“Nice to be back home,” assistant store manager Jordan Jasper told CBS 11 News, be he admitted it took vision to get everything done. “We had a store that needed to be put back together and my mindset was ‘let’s figure out what we need to pick up and what we need to move out of the way so we can open up tomorrow at 6 a.m.’”

On Wednesday the store hosted a ‘board cutting’ — as opposed to the traditional ribbon cutting — to celebrate today’s reopening.

The store will have between 200 and 250 employees and associates, and if you’re looking for a job they’re still hiring.

Health, function fuel kitchen plans today

The kitchen is a home’s hot spot. But a kitchen’s design trends aren’t trendy when its composition and construction are dictated by how people really live, says Jonas Carnemark, whose eponymous design-build firm is based in Bethesda, Maryland.

“The self-isolation caused by the coronavirus pandemic has placed a magnifying lens on home design, especially in the kitchen,” says the 33-year certified kitchen designer, as designated by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. “The kitchen isn’t just a place where people prepare and eat food. It’s the heart and hub of a home, where everyone gathers before and after meals, too.”

The NKBA’s “Living Impacts Design” research was released during the first quarter of 2020, and highlights consumers’ kitchen inclinations based on more than 750 completed industry surveys. Influential changes to kitchen design include: plans for aging in place; homeowners’ need to escape from a chaotic world; a desire to live with less; and more people working from home, according to the report.

“When designing kitchens, people want an open, minimalistic space in which many can gather, and yet have a space that feels cozy and calming,” Carnemark says. “The NKBA research highlights and objectifies trends we’ve been seeing in the kitchen, such as quality builds in terms of sustainability and functionality.”

Designing kitchens that really cook on all levels is a necessity in today’s home.

Whether the cook is on-the-go, with little time for meal prep, or a more health-conscious experimental epicure with the desire to prepare fresh foods, the kitchen is now accommodating many styles and skill levels.

Home Decor – Shabby Chic Decorating Ideas for the Kitchen to Use Today!

Are you looking for shabby chic decorating ideas to use in your kitchen? Here are several easy and fun ideas that I have personally used to incorporate this decorating style in that all-important room of the house – the kitchen.

Start by taking an inventory of keepsakes and newer knick knacks that you like and could be used as shabby chic home décor in the kitchen. Keepsakes that I used in my shabby chic kitchen were an old wooden recipe box, vintage measuring spoons, old tin cookie cutters, a miniature iron, an antique compact, a ceramic rose-design dish with lid and serving spoon, a vintage tea set and a couple of small photos in antique frames.

Decide where you will display your items. I used a tall, wrought iron corner shelf with four shelves to display the above items. On each shelf I draped a small lace doily that hung over the edge of the shelf. What I liked best about this collection was that it was tucked into a corner and out of the flow of traffic, and at the same time it was very attractive. It was a wonderful way to display keepsakes instead of having them packed away in a box.

Shabby chic home décor such as vintage bowls, trays and vases can be displayed on countertops and then brought to life by actually using them. Your family and guests will enjoy the uniqueness of their past and also their present beauty. For most family holiday dinners I bring out the family heirloom serving bowls and trays. What a great way to remember those good old days!

Kitchen curtains are an excellent way to add that shabby chic look with a unique twist. In place of the traditional café curtains, use a valance scarf made out of …

Increase the value of your home

Your home is most likely one of your biggest investments. Unfortunately, its value can decrease over time, especially if it’s not well maintained. However, simply maintaining your home will still not guarantee that its value will increase over time. One way to ensure that it will is to remodel some of the rooms, especially the bathroom and kitchen.

These two areas affect buying decisions. A well-executed kitchen remodeling project will result in a great looking kitchen that attracts buyers, especially women who love well-designed kitchens. This goes the same for bathrooms. Well-designed bathrooms are spacious and easily customizable to fit the desires of any homeowner.

Low Interest Rates

If you haven’t exactly saved up for a bathroom or kitchen remodeling project, you might want to take advantage of the low interest rates. These won’t stay low forever, so check with your bank to find the perfect loan for a remodeling project.

Save on Energy

Some people don’t realize it, but energy costs can build up over time. Kitchen appliances, lighting, and other energy dependent devices use quite a lot of energy. Kitchen remodeling contractors know how to make these areas energy efficient. This can be accomplished by maximizing the use of natural light, using energy efficient light bulbs, and replacing old appliances with newer energy efficient …
