Palatine library OKs contract for renovation

The Palatine Public Library District board has approved a construction contract for the renovation of the main library, and the work is expected to start next month.

The library board awarded the $3,736,650 contract Thursday to F.H. Paschen, based in Chicago, which was selected among 17 proposals ranging from $2.9 million to $4.2 million, plus additional costs for technology. The company was the low bidder when all alternates were accepted, library Executive Director Jeannie Dilger said.

F.H. Paschen’s past work includes interior renovation at the Naperville Public Library and several branches of the Chicago Public Library. The company “understands our need to provide a safe environment while we keep the building open to the public during renovation,” board President Andrea Vanderhoek said.

The library board also awarded a $183,332 moving contract to Iron Mountain. The furniture will be provided by Interiors for Business, Office Revolution, and Library Furniture International at a total cost of $839,286.

The project includes a new “makerspace” for hands-on creativity and learning, more study rooms, a teen space, a larger “quiet reading” room, moving the cafe to the first floor, upgrades to HVAC and energy-efficient lighting, and a new north entrance with easier access from parking lots, especially for people with disabilities.

Library staff members started planning for the renovation by shifting some of the nonfiction collection on the second floor, where the fiction, graphic novels and AV collections will be housed during construction.

The library district recently was awarded a grant under the Public Library Construction Act, as it had hoped when planning for the renovation. The $1.8 million grant from the Illinois State Library will help offset renovation costs

EMSA contractor threatens to terminate contract

A company that contracts to provide paramedics for Oklahoma City’s public ambulance service said Thursday it had served notice of its intent to terminate the contract as soon as Jan. 31, less than halfway through a five-year deal.

The Emergency Medical Services Authority, a public trust, and American Medical Response are wrangling over $16 million EMSA says has accumulated above AMR’s 10% profit cap. AMR questions the legality of the profit cap.

AMR said in a written statement that it filed papers in federal court in Tulsa in response to a lawsuit filed last month by EMSA. AMR asked that the $16 million withheld by EMSA be placed in the control of the court until the lawsuit is resolved.

EMSA provides ambulance service for about 1.1 million residents in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa areas.

Withholding the money “while we are in the midst of a pandemic” jeopardizes integrity and stability of the emergency transportation system, and patient care, said Tom Wagner, AMR’s group president.

“AMR will continue to provide the same high-quality, life-saving services with its experienced and highly-trained paramedics and emergency medical technicians. Regardless of the lawsuit with EMSA, AMR will not leave these communities without emergency medical services,” Wagner said.

7 Key Things Sub – Contractors Must Check Before You Sign That Contract!

1 Who Are You Actually Contracting With?

OK, I accept that this sounds really obvious but how much do you actually know about the organisation that you are getting into a contract with? More importantly will they be around to pay you when the time comes?

There will always be other factors to take into account when deciding on whether or not to enter into the contract. Not least of which, will no doubt be your workload at the time. It is obviously much easier to be selective in times of plenty.

Being willing to place an order with you is only one small part of what you should be looking for in a relationship with a customer. A customer that is likely to become insolvent, or who can’t or won’t, pay is worse than no customer at all and a customer who takes too long to pay, makes unreasonable reductions or sets off money unfairly, could turn out to be your worst nightmare!

You cannot rely solely on the apparent size of the customer. Not all large companies pay their debts on time and some national contractors are the worst payers of all.

If you have worked for an organisation before, then you will have a pretty good idea as to whether or not they pay on time or are quick to make deductions or raise set-offs.

However, don’t assume that because the Manchester office of XYZ national contractor is a good payer, the same will apply to the Bristol office. A lot will depend upon the particular circumstances within that company and within each branch. Whether things go well, may come down to your relationship with individuals within an organisation rather than the inherent culture of the organisation itself.

As a minimum, bank and trade references should be …
