Lady Tigers find improvements in loss to IAHS | Sports

HATLEY – The Hatley Lady Tigers were swept by Itawamba AHS on Thursday night 3-0 by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 but found plenty of improvements as their first season as a team starts to come to a close.

“We were in there for all three sets, and we competed hard,” Hatley coach Chris George said. “Our serves are getting better. We are communicating better on the court, and we gave ourselves a chance tonight. Unfortunately we came out on the losing end, but I have zero complaints about tonight’s game. I’m proud of the girls and the way they got after it.”

Hatley jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, but Itawamba fought back and took a 7-6 lead. The Lady Tigers weren’t done, going back on top both at 10-9 and 12-11 and getting back up by three.

The Lady Indians retook the lead before three straight service aces from Aspen Johnson put Hatley back on top at 21-20. IAHS got the lead back and scored the final two points to take the 25-22 win.

IAHS went up 3-0 in the second set before the Lady Tigers came back and tied the game. IAHS led by as many as six three different times, but Hatley made it interesting, cutting it to four late before falling 25-20.

The third set saw the Lady Indians get another big lead before Hatley tied the game again. IAHS went back on top 7-6 and led by as many as eight before Hatley cut it to four once again.

They trailed by six again before an Emma Rose Thompson kill made it 22-17 and then 22-18, but the Lady Indians hung on for another 25-20 win and the sweep.

Thompson led with five kills, while Madison Mitchell had four kills.

Ask the Builder: Replacing a foundation can be done, but find the right contractor

Q. I’m thinking of buying a house that has a crawlspace. The foundation is in very bad shape. While the house looks quite bad, it’s got good bones. Is it possible to completely remove a bad foundation and install a new, taller one? What’s involved? Who does this type of work? What would you make sure gets done if you’re going to all this work? – Hanna S., Hartford, Connecticut

A. Anybody buying such a dilapidated house needs to negotiate a really good deal. The good news is that the old foundation can be removed and replaced with a new cast-concrete foundation, creating a full basement. The task is not much different from eating an elephant. You just take one bite at a time.

Hanna’s question reminded me of a fascinating time early in my building career. Fresh out of college, I had just rehabbed my first house in Cincinnati. It didn’t need a new foundation, but it was otherwise in pretty bad shape. Four months of work transformed the house back to its former glory.

About a half-mile away, a developer wanted to put in a small shopping mall, but there were about 10 houses and an apartment building in the way. Not only did he buy all these properties, but he proceeded to move them about a mile away on some wooded land he bought at the end of a street. I remember watching these houses, and parts of houses that were cut in half, creeping down the road to their new foundations.

Hanna needs to contact different foundation contractors to see which ones have done exactly what she wants to do. Not all foundation contractors have the expertise to work underneath a house that’s suspended above the work site, sitting on cribbing made with timbers the size

‘Find joy where you can’

When Ann Osborn was looking to update her kitchen this summer in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, she made a last-minute decision to opt for a bold turquoise backsplash instead of a white one.

“Shiplap or white subway tiles were my original choices for our kitchen remodel but then I went totally off-road and decided I wanted some fun color,” she explained in a post on Instagram.

Osborn told TODAY Home that the bright color made her happy. “As much as I’m a fan of a white kitchen, this go-around I didn’t want to play it safe and do something we had already done.”

Considering the coronavirus pandemic was going on during her remodel, Osborn said perhaps it subconsciously played a role in her taking this bold risk. “It’s not for everyone, but if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that life is uncertain, so find joy where you can.”

Emilie Munroe, who owns San Francisco-based interior design firm Studio Munroe, told TODAY that she’s seeing a trend of homeowners updating their all-white kitchens with pops of color.

It’s something she says has been making a comeback over the last five years as celebrities like Cameron Diaz and Hilary Duff have been playing with color in their own kitchens.

Some homeowners have become more adventurous with their design choices because of the Hollywood influence — but adding color to the kitchen is also something Munroe personally encourages her clients to do. These days, especially after months of quarantine and uncertainty, color can be even
