Bay Area hardware stores battle through a crazy year

In San Francisco, the pandemic and subsequent economic downturn have hit many local businesses like a ton of bricks. But for a select few sectors, business has been booming, from the grocery stores that saw mobs of panic-buyers to the gardening centers overwhelmed by bored quarantiners starting victory gardens.

So, what about our neighborhood hardware stores, trustworthy bastions of power tools and cleaning supplies? Are they crazy-busy from the legions of people taking on home improvement projects, or struggling to survive? Four of our favorite local spots told us how they’re doing, from enduring multiple burglaries to seeing soaring sales on unexpected items.

Cliff’s Variety

While business has generally been OK in 2020 at Cliff’s Variety in the Castro, general manager Terry Asten Bennett said they’re forecasting a rough fourth quarter. A lot of the store’s sales come from gifts, souvenirs and seasonal items, and with Halloween effectively canceled and the December holidays up for debate, it could be a tough three months. Sales in September were trending 10% down, when they had only been 5% down over the summer months.

“It’s a balancing act,” Asten Bennett said. “I’m so grateful we got to be open this whole time but it still really hurts. Normally our fourth quarter carries us. We’ve forecasted a bad Halloween.”

While certain department’s sales are up — she said jigsaw puzzle sales have grown 300% — she said the lack of tourists buying gifts, souvenirs and novelty items is hurting their bottom line. She also said school supply sales have been down as kids stay home for distance learning. Most of all, Asten Bennett said she thinks some people are still just scared to go to stores and are choosing online shopping over a traditional retail experience. “We’re also getting really hurt by the Amazon

Father and Son Open New Hardware Store Franchise in Their Neighborhood

Warren Pegram and his stepson, Charlston Austin, have opened an Ace Hardware franchise in their neighborhood in the city of South Fulton, Georgia. It is one of the first hardware stores in their community.

According to the City of South Fulton Observer, the new store is a great addition to the current retail lineup at the Old National Marketplace. Its opening came right on time as the city has been encouraging more small businesses to do business in the area.

The Ace Hardware franchise promises to particularly offer home improvement products that are most needed in the community. Pegram said that unlike other franchises, they will also sell party rental equipment such as commercial grade snow cone machines, inflatables, popcorn machines, and many more.

Austin, who used to work as a former retail account executive, is making sure to connect with the community to know the products they need and to be able to provide it in their hardware store. His father, on the other hand, is ensuring the high level of customer service so everyone who comes to the store will have an awesome shopping experience.

Because of the newest hardware store in the area, residents in the community don’t have to go further away for their home improvement needs. They are also hoping to inspire the younger generations to become entrepreneurs.

To keep their customers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, they are currently offering pick-up and delivery options. They are located at 6385 Old National Hwy Suite 120, South Fulton, GA.

San Marcos police looking for duo after hardware store theft – News – Austin American-Statesman

Police are looking for a man and a woman who stole a large amount of electrical wiring from a Lowe’s Home Improvement store in San Marcos on Sept. 13.

The pair left in a gray four-door car, San Marcos police said in a Monday Facebook post. Police also provided photos of the man they believe was responsible for the theft in their social media post.

Authorities said the man, who is wearing a blue shirt, light blue pants and white athletic shoes in police photos, had an ankle monitor on his left leg. The device is commonly used by law enforcement probation and parole departments.

San Marcos police said they are waiting for responses from multiple probation and parole departments for possible identification of the man in the photos.

“It is possible this suspect is not from San Marcos and may have traveled here to commit this crime. The likelihood of this is certainly increased, given our location on the (Interstate 35) corridor,” police said in the Facebook post.

The man in the photos has identifiable tattoos, including two lightning bolts on his left arm, and a skull on his left calf.

Police said the woman who joined the man in the theft appeared to have been dyeing her hair to a darker color.

Those who may have information regarding the incident or the identity of those believed to be responsible are asked to call San Marcos police at 512-754-2217 or email [email protected]
