Sweetheart Kitchen Raises US$17.7 Million In Series C Funding Round To Launch New Brands And Kitchen Units Across MENA

Cloud kitchen operator Sweetheart Kitchen has successfully secured €15 million (US$17.7 million) in a Series C funding round backed by strategic investors, led by the company’s founder and CEO Peter Schatzberg.

As a delivery-only multi-brand virtual kitchen, Schatzberg notes that the Dubai-based company is keen to invest their funding into supply chain technology, food design and hiring talent, as they had previously done, and which they plan to continue to do so. “Scaling units is certainly one important objective for us, but we are also investing in streamlining our processes and systems to achieve profitability.”

As a company that is only 15 months old, it’s noteworthy to point out its impressive milestones. The startup (which, according to a Wamda report, is backed by Germany’s Delivery Hero) has previously raised €21 million ($24.8 million) in a previous round. Thus, as of date, the startup has raised a total of $43 million. The brand boasts a portfolio of 30 brands, such as Wingo, Avocado Bravo and Affordabowls, among others.

That’s not to say that cloud kitchen startup hasn’t had their fair share of hurdles during the pandemic. Schatzberg comments, “Almost overnight, we pivoted from scaling volume and units, to demonstrating profitability through aggressive cost-cutting measures that would ordinarily take place in a mature enterprise.” They had to close live units in Kuwait, as well as make reductions, and lose cash flow as they were waiting to open a number of completed units, but was vacant due to citywide lockdowns. Watch Dogs Legion’s Director Takes Us Through Some of Its Final Improvements Before Launch

What a difference eight months can make in game development. Back in October of last year, Ubisoft announced that it was delaying Watch Dogs: Legion to an undisclosed date in 2020. The original release date had Legion releasing in March, right at the beginning of our current endless void where time has no meaning. Now, the next Watch Dogs is coming on Oct. 29 for a dizzying array of platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and Google Stadia.

I previewed Watch Dogs: Legion three months ago, during what would normally have been E3. So returning to the game now, I didn’t expect to see much in the way of change. Surprisingly, Ubisoft has tweaked and improved Legion ahead of launch. It’s not a new game entirely, but even from the beginning of my demo I noticed changes.

For example, recruitment options have grown. In Watch Dogs: Legion, every generated character pulls from a pool of perks, having somewhere between zero and three available to them. (Yeah, some folks just fail the digital lottery.) There are new options like “Famous,” which sees that person get noticed in public and is probably not conductive to stealth; “Glass Cannon,” where a person both take and deal more damage; and “Flatulent,” where your chosen member will… sometimes fart and alert enemies to their presence. Some of the combinations don’t make any sense—how does a transient have a silenced MP5?—but making up stories to square those circles is part of the fun.

Forget Black Friday. Bed, Bath &  Beyond says the holiday deals start now. 

For shoppers, whose lives have largely revolved around their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, the retailer intends to offer tips, discounts, and special loyalty perks to woo shoppers.

“With home being the epicenter of all of our lives throughout the pandemic … gifts for (shoppers’) homes are some of the things on the top of the shopping list this year,’’ says Cindy Davis, Bed Bath & Beyond’s chief brand officer.

Starting Oct. 4, through Oct. 31 customers who join the Beyond+ loyalty program will get a bonus card whose $29 value matches the membership fee. The program gives members a 20% discount whenever they make a purchase, as well as early looks at holiday deals and free standard shipping.

All shoppers who spend $75 from Wednesday through Saturday will get $25 in My Funds Rewards that they can use any time in a 30-day period to purchase linen, kitchen accessories and other products.

And shoppers who purchase $200 worth of merchandise online on Oct. 13 and 14 will earn $50 in My Funds Rewards.

Ex-Zillow leaders including Spencer Rascoff launch startup to change how people buy second homes

Former longtime Zillow Group CEO Spencer Rascoff and dotloop founder Austin Allison are teaming up to “democratize” second home ownership.

Rascoff and Allison, who sold his real estate startup to Zillow in 2015, are behind a new startup called Pacaso that aims to make it easier for more people to own a vacation home.

“This is an entirely new category of second home ownership,” Allison said in an interview with GeekWire on Wednesday.

The company came out of stealth mode today, announcing a $17 million seed round led by Maveron, with participation from Crosscut, Global Founders Capital, and individual investors such as former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, real estate coach Tom Ferry, former Zillow executive Greg Schwartz, and Amazon CEO of Consumer Worldwide Jeff Wilke. Pacaso also raised $250 million in debt financing to purchase homes.

People have owned second homes for decades. But it can be expensive to purchase and maintain a property that often goes mostly unused throughout the year. There are 30 million second homes across the U.S. and Europe, but they are only occupied 4-to-6 weeks per year on average, Allison said.

Some decide to split up ownership between multiple parties, but the process can be arduous and complicated, especially when an owner decides to sell his or her stake.

“Pacaso is taking all of those hassles associated with the traditional do-it-yourself process, and all of those risks, and eliminating them,” Allison said.

Pacaso wants to increase utilization of these properties — and build its own business in the process.
