Prospect Park Ballfields Reopen After $1.25M Renovation

PROSPECT PARK, BROOKLYN — Two more ballfields have finished a long-needed update in Prospect Park.

The Prospect Park Alliance announced Tuesday that Long Meadow Ball Fields “4” and “5” have reopened following a $1.25-million renovation. The fields are the latest of the park’s seven baseball fields to get a facelift as part of a years-long project to update the Long Meadow play spaces.

The renovation to ballfields four and five was funded by Council Member Brad Lander.

“I’m so glad that the restoration of the Long Meadow Ballfields 4 + 5 is complete in time for ball players to enjoy them this fall,” Lander said. “Our parks and play areas are a critical resource, especially during this pandemic, to keep our communities happy, healthy, and connected.”

The update to the ballfields included reseeding the turf, adding new clay infields and improving draining. The fields also got new pathways, benches, storage bins and shaded dugouts, according to the Alliance.

The renovation of fields four and five comes three years after fields six and seven got a similar update. Next up in the pipeline will be fields two and three, the Alliance said.

The ballfields are found at the southern end of the park in Long Meadow, the largest stretch of unbroken meadow in any U.S. city park.

“These fields are a destination for thousands of Brooklynites each season for baseball, softball, soccer and flag football,” Prospect Park Alliance President Sue Donoghue said. “Particularly during these times, we are committed to providing welcoming and accessible green space for our community.”

The viral video had shown a portion of the rooftop crumbling down and raising a cloud of dust. At that time, a spokesperson of DLF Mall had said it was not an accident, but a planned work as part of the renovation. It had been reported that renovation work was done to make changes in cinema halls so that moviegoers can practice social distancing.
